Endress+Hauser Canada Ltd. is preparing to introduce a comprehensive portfolio of measurement solutions compatible with Ethernet-APL, a cutting-edge digital communication technology based on the PROFINET protocol. This development follows the company’s successful multi-partner load-testing program, which demonstrated Ethernet-APL’s potential to revolutionize industrial communication.
High-Speed, Long-Distance Communication for Industry
Ethernet-APL is a rugged, two-wire solution designed for process measurements, enabling high-bandwidth digital communication over long distances—even in explosive atmospheres. By providing seamless access to field instrument data, the technology enhances process automation efficiency and supports field-to-cloud networking, optimizing both individual processes and entire facility operations.
Proven Reliability Through Rigorous Testing
Endress+Hauser conducted two extensive load tests using a realistic Ethernet-APL setup, incorporating components from multiple manufacturers to simulate real-world conditions.
First Test: Nearly 240 Endress+Hauser devices—including flow, pressure, temperature, and level sensors—were integrated with field switches and a PROFINET-based control system.
Second Test: A different control system was used to validate interoperability.
Both tests confirmed scalability, fault tolerance, and full compliance with industrial requirements, proving Ethernet-APL’s readiness for real-world deployment.
Overcoming Traditional Ethernet Limitations
Conventional four- or eight-wire Ethernet has struggled to gain traction in field-level process measurement due to:
- Safety constraints in hazardous areas.
- Limited range and high wiring costs.
- Incompatibility with low-power analytical and monitoring tools needed for Industry 4.0 environments.
Ethernet-APL eliminates these barriers, offering a simpler, more cost-effective solution while maintaining the same measurement accuracy as Endress+Hauser’s existing devices.
A Gateway to Industrial IoT
The new product line provides process operators with an ideal entry point to transition toward Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) environments, unlocking greater efficiency and connectivity in industrial automation.
With Ethernet-APL’s proven performance and Endress+Hauser’s expertise, the industry is poised for a next-generation leap in digital communication.
