GenusPlus Group has secured a AUD 65 million (USD 42 million) contract from Sydney-based developer Atmos Renewables to design and construct the 100 MW, four-hour Merredin Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) near Merredin, Western Australia.
The project, developed by Atmos and UK-headquartered Nomad Energy on a four-hectare site approximately 260 km east of Perth, will connect to the South West Interconnected System (SWIS) at Western Power’s Merredin Terminal Station. It sits adjacent to the 100 MW Merredin Solar Farm, developed by Nomad and now owned by Singapore’s Sun Energy.
GenusPlus is responsible for balance of plant engineering, procurement, installation, civil works, and the associated substation for the battery system. Managing Director David Riches said the contract reinforces GenusPlus’s expanding role in Australia’s renewable energy transition and battery storage sector.
“The Merredin BESS adds to our strong track record in delivering complex, large-scale energy infrastructure that underpins Australia’s clean energy future,” Riches said. “This award highlights our reliable delivery and strong customer relationships.”
The Merredin battery project was among four renewable energy initiatives awarded contracts under Western Australia’s first Capacity Investment Scheme (CIS) tender, a federal government program offering long-term revenue agreements to reduce investor risk.
Atmos emphasized the project’s role in improving grid reliability and supporting the state government’s plan to increase energy storage capacity as it phases out coal-fired power. The four-hour battery will bolster grid security and supply stability within the Western Electricity Market.
Construction is slated to begin soon, with financial close expected in the coming weeks. The project aims for completion by early 2027.
