Denbighshire County Council Installs Innovative AC Vehicle-to-Grid Charger

by Harry

Denbighshire County Council in Wales has installed an advanced AC (alternating current) vehicle-to-grid (V2G) charger at its fleet depot, which houses over 400 vehicles, including more than 100 electric vehicles (EVs). This charger allows bi-directional energy flow — EVs can both draw power from the grid and send electricity back to it.

The depot operates a smart local energy system, generating electricity through solar panels linked to a battery storage system. V2G technology enables EVs to charge when electricity costs and emissions are low and supply power back to the grid during peak demand, potentially earning payments for EV owners.

Launched in September 2024, the Vehicle 2 Volume eNergy Yield (V2VNY) project, funded by the UK’s Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, is testing these lower-cost AC chargers. Since homes and workplaces predominantly use AC power, this solution is seen as a more affordable and scalable alternative to traditional DC-based V2G chargers.
