HARTING Canada has strengthened its edge computing portfolio with the launch of the MICA 2, a high-performance mini-computer designed to streamline data capture, processing, and communication in industrial environments. Building on the success of its Modular Industry Computing Architecture (MICA) family, the new model delivers three to five times more computing power than its predecessor, the MICA Basic, enabling faster analysis and wireless connectivity.
Enhanced Performance and Flexibility
The MICA 2 supports wireless data acquisition via 2G/3G/4G, Wi-Fi (802.11a/b/g/n), and Glonass, eliminating the need for extensive cabling. Its modular design allows seamless integration with sensors, meters, and enterprise systems, including MES, ERP, and cloud platforms. For energy monitoring, the MICA Energy variant collects and processes data from current meters and transformers, optimizing resource usage.
Real-Time Analytics and Customization
Users can leverage open-source tools like InfluxDB (time-series database) and Grafana (dashboard software) to visualize and analyze data directly on the device. HARTING also provides customizable MICA kits, enabling OEMs and developers to tailor function boards for specific applications.
Key Industrial Applications
The MICA 2 excels in production monitoring and predictive maintenance, particularly in electronics manufacturing. By fusing RFID tracking with energy, compressed air, and optical sensors, it correlates production steps with energy consumption in real time. Early trials by HARTING highlight its ability to integrate additional key performance indicators (KPIs), such as machine uptime and tool asset management, without complex retrofitting.
Driving Industry 4.0 Adoption
“The MICA 2 simplifies digitization at the machine level,” said a HARTING representative. “Organizations can deploy it rapidly to enhance operational efficiency and data-driven decision-making.”
As industries accelerate automation, HARTING continues to position itself as a leader in modular, edge-ready computing solutions. The MICA 2 is now available for deployment in smart factories and quality-control systems worldwide.
