Makita has entered the sander market with two new additions to its XGT cordless power tool system. These sanders are unique in that they aren’t your typical cordless models, offering a fresh take on battery – powered sanding.
The Innovative Battery Power Adapter Design
One of the most distinctive features of these Makita XGT sanders is the battery power adapter. Unlike traditional cordless sanders where the battery is an integral part of the tool’s weight and size, Makita has designed these adapters to clip onto the user’s belt. This simple yet effective design offloads the battery’s size and weight from the tool itself, resulting in sanders that are much more compact and lighter than their traditional cordless counterparts.
The longer cord length that comes with this setup is also a practical feature. It provides more convenience when using dust extractors or in situations where users don’t want the battery hanging off their belt. However, it’s important to note that product details suggest the two lengths of battery adapters are sold separately, and it’s currently unclear whether either is included with the sander.
Dust and Water Resistance
Both sanders are rated to IPX4 dust and water resistance standards. This means they can withstand splashing water from any direction, making them suitable for use in various environments, including those with some moisture present.
Tool Specifications

Speed Adjustment: It also has an adjustable dial with speeds ranging from 6,000 to 10,000 RPM.
Market Positioning
Makita has announced these new tools to the international market, but there’s been no news yet regarding their availability in the USA. These sanders seem to be targeting a different niche compared to Festool’s 18V hybrid – powered sanders. While Festool focused on allowing for battery or AC power with a separate, ergonomically shaped battery that only works with their sanders, Makita’s focus is on reducing tool size and weight for an improved battery – powered sanding experience. The new Makita sanders work with the brand’s XGT batteries, which are part of a more comprehensive cordless power tool system.
Potential for Future Development
The new Makita sanders appear to have a proprietary connection. However, there’s potential for an AC adapter if there’s enough demand. Additionally, it doesn’t seem like a lot of engineering work would be required to produce 18V or 18V X2 adapter versions of these tools. This could potentially expand their usability and appeal to a wider range of users.
