New Ryobi 18V Cordless Screwdriver: A Basic Addition

by jingji44

Ryobi has introduced a new 18V cordless screwdriver kit, model PCL212, which is being marketed as an “everyday DIY screwdriver.” While it may be a suitable option for some basic tasks, it leaves much to be desired in terms of features and performance.

Features and Specifications

Power and Speed

The new Ryobi cordless screwdriver has a maximum torque of 125 in – lbs and a maximum speed of 600 RPM. These specs are relatively low compared to other cordless screwdrivers on the market. The variable speed trigger allows for some degree of control, but the limited power and speed may make it less effective for more demanding tasks.

Kit Contents

The kit includes a 1.5Ah battery and a charger, and it is priced at $60. This makes it an affordable option for those on a tight budget.

Additional Feature

It also features an LED work light at the base of the handle near the battery connection, which can be useful for working in low – light environments.

Limitations

Lack of Torque Clutch

One of the most significant drawbacks of this screwdriver is the lack of a torque clutch. While it is still possible to drive smaller fasteners to repeatable depths manually, it requires more care and attention. A torque clutch is a valuable feature that helps prevent over – tightening and ensures consistent fastening.

Limited Power and Speed

With only 125 in – lbs of max torque and 600 RPMs, this screwdriver may struggle with larger or tougher fasteners. It is suitable for casual driving applications such as furniture assembly, small repairs, and hanging items, but it may not be up to the task for more heavy – duty projects.

Comparison with Other Tools

Similarity to Basic Drill

The new screwdriver is essentially a screwdriver version of Ryobi’s basic 18V cordless drill launched earlier this year. The two tools look identical except for the different chucks.

Comparison with Other Brands

There are better cordless screwdrivers on the market, but they start at 2X the price. For example, the Dewalt 12V Max Xtreme model is a more feature – rich option. However, Ryobi’s screwdriver is more affordable, making it an attractive choice for those on a budget.

As a Third Tool

If one already has a cordless drill with an adjustable torque clutch and an impact driver for higher speed and torque applications, this screwdriver may not be the best choice as a third tool. It is a stripped – down and compromised option, and there are better – featured 12V – class cordless screwdrivers available, although they tend to be pricier.

Personal Opinion

The author was initially excited about Ryobi’s new 18V cordless screwdriver but quickly became underwhelmed due to its lack of features. They would prefer to compromise on a drill rather than a screwdriver with limited capabilities. They also mention that their first cordless drill was a 2 – in – 1 Black & Decker 12V Firestorm, which had a built – in 1/4″ hex bit holder and a drill chuck that attached over it. They considered it a perfect starter screwdriver and drill.

In conclusion, while the new Ryobi 18V cordless screwdriver may be a good option for those on a tight budget and with basic fastening needs, it lacks many of the features that are becoming standard in modern cordless screwdrivers. It is important for consumers to carefully consider their needs and requirements before making a purchase.
