POSCO Future M Co., the battery materials subsidiary of POSCO Holdings Inc., announced Tuesday the completion of a major precursor production facility in Gwangyang, about 290 kilometers south of Seoul. The plant marks a critical step in building a fully integrated domestic supply chain for electric vehicle (EV) battery materials.
The newly constructed plant, located within POSCO’s existing cathode materials complex, has an annual output capacity of 45,000 tons—enough to power batteries for approximately 500,000 electric vehicles.
“With this facility, we’ve established a self-sufficient system spanning raw materials, intermediate precursors, and cathode production,” said Eom Gi-chen, President of POSCO Future M. “It also enhances the competitiveness of South Korea’s battery industry as global supply chains continue to shift.”
In battery production, precursors are critical intermediate materials that are processed into cathode active materials, a core component of lithium-ion batteries.
The company noted that the plant’s completion will help reduce exposure to global trade uncertainties by reinforcing the local supply ecosystem, especially in coordination with POSCO Group’s expanding nickel supply network.
