To promote battery recycling and meet international environmental standards, South Korea’s Ministry of Environment has announced plans to introduce a recycled material certification system for batteries. The initiative, part of a broader push to advance battery circular use, aims to enhance the credibility of recycled materials and increase the use of recycled content in newly manufactured batteries.
The plan, revealed on May 14 during an economic ministers’ meeting at the Government Sejong Center, outlines four key focus areas and 14 policy actions:
- Creation of a Circular Use Market
- Stabilization of Supply for Recyclable Resources
- Technological Innovation and Competitiveness Enhancement
- Establishment of Lifecycle Management Foundations
As part of these efforts, the government will establish a recycled material usage target system, which will apply to batteries either manufactured or imported into the country. The key aspect of this new system is the certification of precious metals, such as nickel sulfate, recovered from used or defective batteries. The certification will confirm that these recycled materials are used in new batteries, including their content ratio.
The Ministry of Environment intends to finalize the certification details by the end of this year and begin pilot operations in preparation for full implementation by 2027. In addition, the government will offer consulting services to assist companies in obtaining certification.
This new initiative is part of South Korea’s broader goal to foster a more sustainable and competitive battery industry by promoting the circular economy and ensuring greater resource efficiency in battery production and recycling.
