A new NALP survey reveals 81% of Americans have lawns, with 79% calling them essential when choosing homes. Surprisingly, millennials value lawns most—82% prioritize them over kitchen upgrades. Yards aren’t just for looks: 77% relax outside monthly, and parks outrank movie theaters for leisure. Landscapers say the data proves lawns remain central to American life.
Younger Generations Prioritize Lawns More Than Older Counterparts
A new survey by the National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP) reveals that Americans continue to highly value lawns, with younger generations showing even greater appreciation than older ones. The study, conducted by Engine’s CARAVAN Omnibus, found that 81% of Americans have a lawn, and 79% consider it an important factor when renting or buying a home.
When ranking home features, respondents placed a nice-sized yard second, just behind a renovated kitchen and ahead of updated bathrooms, storage, and hardwood floors. Notably, millennials ranked lawns as their top priority, surpassing even kitchen upgrades. Eighty-two percent of millennials said a lawn is important when choosing a home, compared to 81% of Generation X and 77% of baby boomers.
Lawns Serve as Spaces for Relaxation and Recreation
Contrary to assumptions that urbanization and technology reduce interest in outdoor spaces, the survey found that Americans actively use their yards. Forty-seven percent entertain in their yards at least once a month, while 57% use them for recreation. Additionally, 77% relax in their yards monthly, and 32% garden multiple times a week.
Beyond private lawns, Americans also frequent public green spaces. The study showed that parks and playgrounds are visited more often than movie theaters, pools, beaches, bowling alleys, and museums.
Industry Experts Highlight the Value of Green Spaces
Missy Henriksen, NALP’s vice president of public affairs, emphasized the significance of lawns in daily life. “Lawns and public green spaces provide a backdrop for memory-making moments while benefiting communities and the environment,” she said. “This research underscores the vital role of lawn care professionals in maintaining healthy outdoor spaces nationwide.”
The findings reinforce the enduring appeal of lawns, proving they remain a cherished feature of American homes and neighborhoods.
