Epic Energy Nears Launch of 100-MW Mannum Battery in South Australia

by Harry

Epic Energy has completed construction of its 100-MW / 200-MWh Mannum Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and is now entering the commissioning phase, following successful registration with the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO).

Located near Epic Energy’s existing solar farms at Mannum Energy Park, the two-hour battery system is designed to support South Australia’s grid by storing excess solar energy during low demand and discharging during peak hours. Once operational, it will have the capacity to power approximately 16,000 homes for a full day.

Commissioning will be carried out in coordination with AEMO and ElectraNet, South Australia’s high-voltage transmission network owner. The testing phase is expected to span several months, with commercial operations anticipated later in 2025.

“This is a major milestone for our renewable energy ambitions,” said Clive D’Cruz, CEO of Epic Energy. “The Mannum BESS is a strategic addition to South Australia’s energy infrastructure, providing both reliability and flexibility.”

The project represents Phase 3 of the Mannum Energy Park, originally developed by Recurrent Energy, a subsidiary of Canadian Solar Inc., and acquired by Epic Energy in early 2024. The BESS uses SolBank lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells from Canadian Solar’s e-Storage division.
