Alexandria Becomes First in Virginia to Ban Gas-Powered Leaf Blowers

Alexandria is now the first city in Virginia to ban gas-powered leaf blowers. The City Council approved the new ordinance in mid-May, setting a timeline for phasing out the devices.

Under the new law, residents and businesses have 18 months to stop using gas-powered leaf blowers. City operations must make the switch within one year.

The decision comes after strong feedback from residents and a legal opinion from Virginia’s Attorney General. The opinion confirmed that the city can regulate the devices under its noise ordinance.

The Alexandria Beautification Commission also raised concerns about the health and environmental impact of gas-powered leaf blowers.
