At their meeting on Monday, June 2, members of the Oregon Village Board discussed a new plan to install Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations at several spots around the village. Some board members expressed concerns about the cost and the type of chargers proposed.
Trustee Lynn McDaniel shared updates on Dane County’s “Charge Up Dane County” initiative. This national program aims to bring more EV charging stations to various locations, including urban centers, rural areas, and public transit hubs. Possible sites in Oregon include the Public Library, Village Hall, the future senior center, Park Street, Highlands of Netherwood Park, Waterman Park, and Kiser Fireman Park. If approved, each location would have five charging spots with easy access.
The stations would use Level Two Chargers, which led to some debate. Board member Tim Higgins raised concerns about the speed of Level Two Chargers. He explained that most EV owners charge their vehicles overnight at home using Level Two Chargers. For public charging, he said a faster Level Three Charger is more useful because it provides quick and efficient charging when needed.
“Level Three is the gold standard,” added board member Amanda Peterson. “It charges much faster and saves time.”
The village has not yet fully committed to the project. Board members are weighing whether the cost of installing these stations is justified given the slower charging speed. The board will make its final decision by June 13.
