Enhanced Engine Management System Boosts Performance and Efficiency
Exmark has announced the next generation of its patented RED (Run Efficiently and Dependably) technology, now integrated into the 2018 Lazer Z line of zero-turn mowers. The upgraded system enhances power, fuel efficiency, and operator control across both gas and diesel models.
How Exmark RED Technology Works
The advanced engine management system uses proprietary software and an onboard LCD control panel to optimize performance. Operators can adjust power and efficiency through customizable modes while monitoring key functions such as maintenance alerts and troubleshooting diagnostics.
Jamie Briggs, Exmark Product Manager, explained: “RED Technology works with Electronic Fuel Injection and E-Governor systems to improve engine responsiveness and reduce governor droop. This ensures consistent RPM levels, adapting dynamically to changing mowing conditions.”
Customizable Operation Modes
The latest RED system introduces six operation modes, replacing the previous three-position rocker switch with a digital LCD interface. Key modes include:
Low Mode: Reduces blade tip speed for wet lawns, preventing deck clogging.
Efficient Mode: Optimizes RPM for balanced performance, lowering emissions and fuel consumption.
Max Mode: Delivers maximum power for dense or overgrown grass, though with higher fuel usage.
Operators can switch modes seamlessly, whether the cutting deck is engaged or not.
Clutch Protection and Safe Transport
Next-gen RED technology includes a clutch-saving feature that temporarily reduces RPM during engagement, minimizing wear. Additionally, if a critical issue is detected, the system automatically shifts into Safe Transport Mode, disengaging the clutch and lowering RPM to allow safe return for servicing.
Advanced System Monitoring
The RED control module tracks service intervals, logs error codes, and records maintenance history. It also provides real-time operating statistics, including:
- Total and average fuel consumption
- Engine and PTO hours (resettable and non-resettable)
- Property-specific usage data for up to five locations
Additional Features
Auto-idle: Engine reduces RPM when the operator leaves the seat.
Throttle-down: Quickly lowers RPM for precision mowing near sensitive areas.
Fuel and usage analytics: Helps operators track efficiency and maintenance needs.
