A recent survey conducted by the Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) found that more than 85 percent of landscape contractors using propane-powered commercial mowers plan to expand their propane equipment fleets. The study highlights the growing acceptance of propane as a reliable and cost-effective alternative to traditional gasoline mowers.
Most contractors began their transition to propane by installing conversion kits on existing equipment—a cost-efficient method that minimizes downtime and reduces fuel expenses across various mower brands.
Contractors Report Positive Performance and Long-Term Benefits
Among the 374 contractors surveyed, a significant majority reported using propane equipment for at least three years, with many stating that propane mowers perform as well as or better than gasoline models.
Jeremy Wishart, PERC’s director of off-road business development, noted that the data confirms contractors’ satisfaction with propane mowers. “The initial investment often pays off quickly, leading to continued use as contractors experience the fuel’s advantages,” he said.
Shifting Perceptions and Market Trends
Compared to a previous survey, contractor sentiment toward propane has improved significantly. While only 14 percent of respondents expressed unfavorable views toward propane, a much larger share—62 percent—held negative opinions about electric commercial mowers.
Despite this progress, PERC identified an area for improvement: awareness of its Propane Mower Incentive Program remains low among contractors not yet using propane equipment. The program offers financial incentives—up to 500 per conversion kit—helping contractors offset upfront costs and achieve faster returns.
Among those aware of the incentive, 57 percent said it increased their likelihood of adopting propane mowers, signaling an opportunity for further market growth through education and outreach.
