New Jersey Turnpike Adds Universal EV Chargers, Tesla Stations Removed

by Harry

Starting June 6, six rest areas along the New Jersey Turnpike will have universal charging stations for electric vehicles. At the same time, Tesla Superchargers at these stops will be removed.

This is important news for EV drivers who need to recharge on the Turnpike.

Until now, electric vehicles that were not Teslas had to use an adapter to charge at Tesla Superchargers in these rest areas.

Jason Barnes, an auto technology instructor at Philadelphia Community College, said the new universal chargers will be a “game changer.”

“You have to build up the infrastructure because EVs are the wave of the future,” Barnes said.

He explained that universal chargers can connect to more than one type of vehicle, unlike Tesla chargers that only work with Tesla cars.

Barnes compared charging an EV to filling a gas tank. “To fill a car with gas, drivers just pull up and pay,” he said. But for EVs, many drivers carry adapters to connect their cars to Tesla chargers.

“When the industry was new, different manufacturers used different charging ports and adapters,” Barnes added.
