South Korea’s Personal Information Protection Commission announced on June 10 that it has selected four devices—including home cameras and robotic vacuum cleaners—for the 2025 “Privacy by Design (PbD)” pilot certification program. The goal is to begin safety verification of these products starting this month.
Privacy by Design is a concept that ensures personal privacy is considered throughout every stage of a product’s life cycle, from planning and production to disposal. The approach aims to prevent personal data violations before they happen.
The commission first launched the pilot PbD certification in 2023. The program focuses on products that collect personal data—such as home CCTVs and smart appliances—to help protect consumers and hold manufacturers more accountable. So far, four products have received the certification since its start.
For the 2025 program, the range of certified devices is expanding. In addition to common household items like smart home cameras and robotic vacuum cleaners, the certification will now include advanced technologies such as autonomous driving systems. This year’s selected devices are home cameras, in-vehicle video recorders, home robots, and robotic vacuum cleaners.
The commission said it will begin full safety checks on these products this month, aiming to improve both consumer trust and data security across the growing landscape of smart technology.
