In recognition of National Dog Month, NaturaLawn of America has released findings from a new survey highlighting pet owners’ concerns about the potential dangers of lawn chemicals. The study reveals that while most pet owners are aware of the risks, many lack confidence in their yard’s safety.
According to the survey, an overwhelming majority of pet owners—91%—acknowledge the hazards that harsh lawn treatments may pose to their pets. However, only half feel fully assured that their yard is a safe environment for their animals. Notably, 83% of respondents expressed concern about the effects of lawn chemicals on their pets.
Weed Control Products Under Scrutiny
The survey also examined pet owners’ habits and perceptions regarding weed control. A significant portion of respondents reported using weed control products in their yards, with 56% applying treatments themselves and 23% relying on professional lawn services.
Despite widespread usage, awareness of the risks remains high. Seventy-three percent of pet owners recognize that many weed control products contain chemicals linked to serious health issues, including non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in certain dog breeds.
Mixed Opinions on Safe Reentry Times After Treatment
When asked how long they wait before allowing pets back onto treated lawns, responses varied widely:
- A small percentage do not wait at all.
- Some wait at least 30 minutes.
- Others wait an hour or a few hours.
- A quarter of respondents wait a full day.
- A minority remain unsure of the appropriate waiting period.
The findings underscore a critical gap between awareness and action, as many pet owners remain uncertain about how to balance lawn care with pet safety. NaturaLawn’s survey serves as a reminder for homeowners to research and consider pet-friendly alternatives when maintaining their yards.
