A 26-year-old man from Limerick has pleaded guilty to assaulting a pensioner with a screwdriver during an attempted robbery in County Limerick.
Sean Byrnes, of Limerick City Hotel, Dock Road, appeared in court on charges of attempted robbery, assault causing harm, and possession of a weapon. The incident occurred on May 14, 2024, in Dromcollogher.
The victim, a man in his 70s, suffered two scalp lacerations requiring medical procedures, along with a bruised forehead and eye. He told authorities he feared for his life during the attack.
The court also heard that Byrnes rammed a Garda vehicle while collecting social welfare payments, further complicating the case.
Judge Colin Daly delivered his judgement following earlier submissions from prosecuting barrister Lily Buckley, acting on behalf of the State solicitor Brendan Gill, with evidence presented by Detective Garda Neil O’Gorman.
The court was told Byrnes comes from “a good home,” though his actions were described as serious and violent.
Sentencing is expected to reflect the gravity of the offence and the impact on the victim.
