Formosa Smart Energy Develops Advanced Solid-State Lithium Battery

by Harry

Formosa Smart Energy has teamed up with Ming Chi University of Technology’s battery research center to create a prototype of an all-solid-state lithium battery. This new battery technology has earned 19 international patents.

The two partners also found a way to lower the resistance at the interface between the electrode and the solid-state electrolyte. This has been a major obstacle in developing solid-state batteries, said Formosa Smart Energy General Manager Liu Hui-chi.

Company Chair Sandy Wang said the batteries have several benefits, such as high energy density, longer driving range, and improved safety. She pointed out that this technology greatly lowers the chance of battery fires or explosions, making it ideal for electric vehicles (EVs).

Wang explained that the batteries use solid electrolyte technology, which replaces the liquid electrolyte and separator found in regular lithium-ion batteries. This change simplifies the battery’s design and cooling system while reducing its size and weight.

The two groups have also started a pilot production line to test the new batteries. This line covers making key components, stacking cells, assembling modules, and quality control. It uses Formosa Smart Energy’s technology to boost battery performance and extend lifespan.

Liu said the company invested NT$230 million (about US$7.1 million) in the pilot line. Batteries made here will be tested in drones and small EVs. Full production is planned to start by June 2027.

Earlier this year, Formosa Smart Energy opened Taiwan’s largest battery cell factory in Changhua Coastal Industrial Park, investing NT$16 billion. The factory supplies lithium battery packs for local electric buses, with up to 80% of its production automated.

Liu added that the company expects to earn NT$10 billion in revenue this year. Orders from other companies within the Formosa Plastics Group make up 30% of its total demand. The company also plans to start delivering battery packs for domestic electric logistics vehicles this year.
