The Westport Conservation Department is reminding residents and landscape crews that the second year of the town’s gas-powered leaf blower ban begins soon. Starting May 15, 2025, the use of handheld and backpack gas-powered leaf blowers will be prohibited in Westport.
Conservation Director Colin Kelly explained, “As of Thursday, May 15, 2025, gas-powered leaf blowers cannot be used during the Summer months. According to the Leaf Blower Ordinance passed by the Representative Town Meeting (RTM) in 2023, ‘Summer’ is defined as the period between May 15th and October 15th each year.” For more details, residents can visit the Conservation Department page on the town website.
Kelly added that the department had received numerous complaints last year, leading to notices being sent to 168 properties in town. The notices informed property owners about the local ordinance and provided information on alternative equipment, the impact of noise, and ways to reduce emissions. “This year, we hope to see a significant increase in the number of property owners using compliant equipment and updating their landscaping practices,” Kelly said.
The Conservation Department will continue its efforts to enforce the ban this year. “We need help from the public,” Kelly said. “If you see a property using a prohibited blower, please contact us by email or letter. We will review each complaint and send educational materials to those not following the ordinance.”
