Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) is aiming to restart its Elkhorn battery storage facility by June 1, 2025, following a January fire at a neighboring facility owned by Vistra Corp. The utility company submitted a letter to the Monterey County Board of Supervisors on Wednesday, outlining the steps taken in response to the incident and its plans to resume service as the summer season approaches.
The Elkhorn facility was shut down on January 16 after its safety protocol equipment detected the fire at the adjacent Vistra-owned facility. While PG&E’s facility never caught fire, the precautionary shutdown kept it offline for several months. Since then, PG&E has carried out extensive inspection and clean-up operations to ensure the safety and reliability of its battery storage operations.
The company emphasized its intent to have the facility back online by early June to support the electric grid during the high-demand summer months. PG&E’s proactive measures aim to bolster energy storage capacity and ensure grid stability in the face of increasing demand for electricity, particularly during peak summer periods.
PG&E’s efforts to address the fire and resume operations highlight the growing importance of energy storage facilities in maintaining grid reliability, particularly as the energy sector continues to invest in renewable energy sources.
