Alexandria residents may soon experience quieter, cleaner neighborhoods if the city moves forward with a proposed ban on gas-powered leaf blowers. The Alexandria City Council is set to review the ban, with a first reading on Tuesday and a public hearing and final action scheduled for Saturday at 9:30 a.m..
To ease the transition, city staff have recommended a two-year phase-out period, with the ban taking effect on July 1, 2027. The proposed ban is a response to the increasing number of noise complaints linked to gas-powered leaf blowers, which are known to be louder and more polluting than their electric counterparts.
Currently, city regulations limit the use of power lawn and garden equipment to 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekends and holidays. With the growing concern over the environmental and noise impacts of gas-powered equipment, the ban aims to promote cleaner, quieter alternatives while providing ample time for residents and landscaping companies to transition.
