CATL Unveils High-Capacity Storage Cell to Boost System Efficiency

by Harry

Chinese battery giant CATL has officially launched its next-generation energy storage battery cell and begun mass production and delivery, the company announced at an event in Shanghai on Tuesday.

The new 587 amp-hour (Ah) cell is designed specifically for large-scale energy storage and follows three years of research and testing. CATL said the product strikes a balance between regulatory compliance, compatibility with energy storage stations, integration efficiency, and electrochemical performance.

Built to align with 20-foot container dimensions and 1,500-volt power conversion systems (PCS), the cell simplifies system design. It reduces the number of components needed in each storage unit from 30,000 to 18,000—making energy systems easier to assemble and maintain.

The battery achieves an energy density of 434 watt-hours per liter (Wh/L), a 10% improvement over its predecessor. When used in energy storage systems, it can boost overall energy density by up to 25%, CATL said.

The company also highlighted gains in system efficiency, reliability, and degradation resistance. According to CATL, the lifecycle return on investment (ROI) for this new cell is 5% higher than the previous generation.

Safety is a key focus: the cell has passed multiple mandatory safety tests in China, and it does not catch fire or explode when exposed to overcharging, thermal runaway, or punctures.

To date, CATL has deployed more than 256 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of energy storage capacity worldwide through products like its earlier 280 Ah and 314 Ah models. These have been used in over 1,000 energy storage projects with no reported accidents, the company said.

While electric vehicle batteries remain CATL’s core business, energy storage is a rapidly growing segment. In 2024, CATL posted revenue of RMB 362 billion (approximately $50 billion), reflecting a year-on-year decrease of 9.7%, according to its latest annual report.
