ACEnergy has announced that the Australian Electricity Market Operator (AEMO) has approved performance standards for connecting the 250 MW Joel Joel battery energy storage system (BESS) in Victoria’s Wimmera region.
The project, located on a 10-hectare site about 25 kilometers east of Stawell in northwest Victoria, had already received planning approval for a larger 350 MW / 700 MWh system. The recent 5.3.4A notification from AEMO grants connection approval for a 250 MW battery with four hours of storage capacity. It will also feature advanced grid-forming inverters designed to enhance grid stability.
Joel Prata, Head of Grid at ACEnergy, called the approval a major milestone for the project.
“Achieving the 5.3.4A notification for Joel Joel BESS is a key step toward connecting the project to the National Electricity Market (NEM),” he said. “By using grid-forming inverters, the battery will help stabilize the grid and address system strength challenges in northwestern Victoria.”
The Joel Joel BESS is expected to play a significant role in supporting Victoria’s renewable energy transition by improving energy storage and grid reliability.
