At a launch event in Seoul on Monday, Dyson unveiled its slimmest cordless vacuum cleaner yet—the PencilVac. This sleek new model features a 38-millimeter diameter handle and weighs just 1.8 kilograms.
To create the PencilVac’s ultra-slim design, Dyson developed a proprietary Hyperdymium motor about the size of a Korean 500-won coin (37 cents). Nathan McLean, senior engineering manager at Dyson, explained, “The challenge was to get something small enough to fit this new 38 millimeters. It is over 34 percent more power-dense than its predecessor and spins 140,000 times per minute.”
Despite its compact size, the PencilVac delivers strong suction power, with 55 air watts—enough to remove more than 99 percent of fine dust on hard floors, according to Dyson.
The vacuum also features Dyson’s first Fluffycones cleaner head, which includes four conically shaped nylon brush bars. These brushes rotate in opposite directions to improve pickup efficiency from all angles.
