The City of Toledo’s Division of Environmental Services has extended its $100 rebate offer for Lucas County residents who swap their old gasoline-powered lawn mowers for electric models. Originally set to expire on May 31, the program will now accept rebate applications through August 31.
So far, 347 residents have taken advantage of the rebate. Rachel Hart, the city’s communications director, said, “If funds remain after this extension, we will try to secure another extension, but there are no guarantees.”
Hart noted that the battery-powered mowers purchased under the program save about 17 tons of airborne emissions annually.
This initiative addresses a significant environmental concern. A 2015 study presented at the International Emissions Inventory Conference found that gasoline-powered lawn and garden equipment emit high levels of toxic and carcinogenic pollutants, with lawn mowers alone responsible for 40% of those emissions.
