In the world of power tools, battery platforms have traditionally been restrictive. If you own 12V tools, you typically need 12V batteries; the same goes for 18V, 20V, and other voltage levels. DeWalt recognized this as a limitation, especially for those who own tools across multiple platforms or want to gradually transition to more powerful tool lines. To address this, DeWalt developed a backward – compatible platform that offers semi – universal battery use and can even improve run time or power output by up to 77% on some tools compared to traditional lithium – ion batteries.
Understanding Lithium – Ion Batteries
Lithium – ion batteries are rechargeable, high – output power sources. You likely carry them in your phone, use them in your laptop, or have them in your car. These batteries are ideal for creating a cordless jobsite when paired with tools. They consist of cells with positive and negative electrodes that transfer lithium ions to discharge energy in one direction or the other, either powering your tool or recharging the battery. While there’s more complex chemistry involved, what’s important to know is that more volts equal more power, and more amp hours generally mean longer run time. Different voltage platforms typically offer a range of amp hours, and this is where the DeWalt FLEXVOLT system comes in.
How FLEXVOLT is Different
DeWalt has developed two solutions for multi – platform charging, mainly for 20V and 60V tools: FLEXVOLT and FLEXVOLT Advantage.
FLEXVOLT Batteries
FLEXVOLT batteries are a game – changer. They can be used on both 20V and 60V tools, allowing you to have one battery that adapts to different tool ranges. These batteries are designed for 60V tools, but when used with 20V tools, they provide extended runtime without boosting the power to 60 volts.
FLEXVOLT Advantage Tools
FLEXVOLT Advantage tools offer a middle – ground option. These are 20V – compatible tools that work uniquely with FLEXVOLT batteries to increase power, giving your 20V tools an extra boost. The backward compatibility is evident here, as you can use any standard 20V MAX battery for normal operation or a FLEXVOLT battery for more power.
Choosing the Right Battery
The battery you choose depends on the tools you want to use. Generally, FLEXVOLT batteries are the best option. They are the only batteries compatible with any FLEXVOLT tools you currently own or may purchase in the future. They also work with FLEXVOLT Advantage tools and DeWalt’s standard 20V MAX tools. FLEXVOLT batteries are available in 6.0, 9.0, or 12.0 AH versions, ensuring you have the power and run – time needed for any job.
