When the Milwaukee M18 1” pistol grip Impact was released last year, there was an immediate demand for a D – Handle version. Now, the highly anticipated 2868 – 22HD (799), is also available. These tools are not designed for removing truck tires but are more focused on construction, steel erection, and bolting applications.
Historical Context
The founder of Ohio Power Tool, Jim, had a 10 – year career at Ingersoll Rand before starting OPT. In the first 15 years of business, there was a strong focus on repairing pneumatic tools, with a significant number of tire guns being sold and serviced even today. This new launch of cordless impact wrenches from Milwaukee aims to target a different market segment.
Can Cordless Tools Replace Pneumatic?
Air Tools vs Cordless
Air tool brands like Chicago Pneumatic and Ingersoll Rand are struggling to compete with cordless tools. Their markets are shrinking, and production is decreasing. As a result, they are making tough decisions. For example, the IR 2190Ti – 6 impact, a popular tire removal impact, has been discontinued. Customers are being redirected to the 2850MAX – 6 ($599), which is more powerful but also 30% heavier. This increased weight makes it less appealing compared to cordless solutions, especially when the additional power is not required.
Construction and Shop Scenarios
In construction, unless there is a pull – behind compressor onsite (which is a hassle), many workers may switch to cordless tools. Similarly, in shops where air lines are readily available, many mechanics prefer the 3/8” cordless impact over pneumatic ones. It remains to be seen if the same will be true for 1” impact wrenches.
Power & Runtime
Power
The Milwaukee M18 FUEL 1” Impact tools have a break – away torque of 2,000 ft/lbs, which is on par with many premium pneumatic competitors. This high level of power makes them suitable for heavy – duty applications.
Runtime
These units claim to be able to handle 200 bolts of 1 – 1/4” size, indicating a long runtime. For the 12.0Ah battery, runtime should not be an issue. However, in many applications, the 8.0Ah battery may be used to reduce the weight of the tool.
Cost and Maintenance
Compared to premium pneumatic impacts, the price tag of the M18 cordless solutions is not significantly higher, especially for those already in the M18 platform with High Output batteries. Additionally, cordless tools do not require hoses, tool oil, or maintenance related to moisture in lines or temperature issues. They also come with a full 2 – year warranty, which is a significant advantage over air tools, as getting a warranty on an air tool 20 months after purchase can be challenging.
ONE – KEY & Tool Settings
Consistency
Air tools can be inconsistent due to various factors that affect their power, which in turn impacts performance. In contrast, the M18 options have 4 very consistent DRIVE CONTROL modes. ONE – KEY also allows users to customize their tools according to their specific needs.
Extended Anvil Version
The extended anvil version coming later this year will be equipped with a lug nut tightening mode for 350 – 450 ft lbs, which helps prevent over – tightening.
The Future of Cordless Tools
In the late 1800s, New York City US post offices used an elaborate pneumatic tube system to send mail. However, as technology advanced and the maintenance of large air compressors and air lines became too labor – intensive, the system was abandoned. Similarly, while there are trade – offs to going cordless, such as the need for battery charging, the benefits of cordless tools, including convenience, reduced maintenance, and consistent performance, may outweigh the costs in many applications.
