A recent study has revealed that 41% of 18-29-year-old e-ride owners are unaware of the safety risks associated with using incompatible chargers and batteries. Additionally, 64% of those surveyed said they would consider buying generic replacement batteries and chargers online.
Leanne Hughson, Chief Executive of Energy Safe, expressed concern about the findings. “Using incompatible batteries and chargers in lithium-ion devices is a leading cause of thermal runaway, which can result in the battery overheating and potentially exploding,” Ms. Hughson said. “The misuse of lithium-ion batteries has led to numerous house fires, fatalities, and serious injuries, both in Australia and internationally.”
Lithium-ion batteries are commonly used in e-rides, such as e-scooters and e-bikes. To raise awareness of the dangers, Energy Safe Victoria has launched a new campaign aimed at educating e-ride owners on safe charging practices. The campaign, which highlights how quickly a fire can start with incompatible batteries and chargers, has been developed in collaboration with Victoria’s Country Fire Authority and Fire Rescue Victoria.
Ms. Hughson stressed that not all chargers are compatible with e-ride batteries, noting, “Just because the plug fits doesn’t mean the charger is safe or suitable.” She also cautioned that purchasing batteries and chargers online from overseas suppliers can often result in products that fail to meet Australian safety standards.
