The New Zealand Government has announced a new concessionary loan scheme to help reach its goal of increasing the number of public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations to 10,000 by 2030, up from approximately 1,400.
At a policy announcement in Lower Hutt, Transport Minister Chris Bishop emphasized the need for more EV chargers. “New Zealand needs more EV chargers,” he stated. “We have fewer public chargers per EV compared to many other countries in the OECD, and we know this is a barrier for Kiwis wanting to purchase EVs.”
Bishop, along with Climate Change Minister Simon Watts, revealed that the Government would use a public-private funding model to expand the charging network. The Crown will offer concessionary loans to organizations to help fund the rollout of new charging stations.
While the target is ambitious, Bishop acknowledged the challenge. “It’s an ambitious goal, I’d call it a stretch target,” he said.
