The familiar hum of gas-powered lawnmowers is fading from many Long Island lawns as electric robotic mowers take over. These mowers were developed by Kevin Boodram, a former law student who founded Serenity Robotic Lawncare after the loud noise from traditional mowers disrupted his studies during the COVID-19 pandemic. Today, his company serves around 70 customers who prefer this quieter, more peaceful approach to lawn care.
Boodram’s decision to shift from law school to landscaping came out of frustration with the constant noise. “Unbearable, that’s the only word to really describe it. I couldn’t hear myself think” . His battery-powered robots use sensors to navigate lawns and can mow at any hour, even as late as 3 a.m., without disturbing neighbors due to their near-silent operation.
In addition to reducing noise, Serenity’s robots focus on environmental benefits. Dr. Bonnie Sager of Huntington Cleaner Alternative Landscaping Methods pointed out the negative health effects of noise pollution, comparing it to secondhand smoke. As a result, many municipalities are considering incentives to promote electric landscaping methods, aligning with the growing push for quieter and more eco-friendly alternatives.
