Dyson Launches Ultra-Slim PencilVac, Calling It “The Broom of the Future”

by Harry

Dyson has introduced its latest innovation in home cleaning: the PencilVac, a lightweight cordless vacuum cleaner that the company is calling “the broom of the future.”

Touted as the world’s slimmest vacuum cleaner, the PencilVac features a sleek, broom-like shape with a body just 38 millimetres in diameter. It’s designed mainly for hard floors and includes a large cleaning head and a smooth, rounded silhouette from top to bottom.

“The idea was to fit everything into 38 millimetres,” said Dyson design manager Sam Cole in an interview with Dezeen. “Whether it’s the top or the handle – really, the whole thing is kind of a handle.”

The slim design is the result of years of research and development. Dyson’s engineering team determined that 38 millimetres was the optimal size—small enough to be comfortable to hold, yet large enough to house the necessary components. This is the same diameter used in many of Dyson’s Supersonic hair dryers.

Powering the PencilVac is Dyson’s new Hyperdymium motor, described as the company’s fastest and smallest motor to date. Cole explained that the 38-millimetre size offers the best balance between ergonomic design and power efficiency.

“If you make the motor smaller, you lose power. If you go bigger, it’s not as comfortable for people with smaller hands,” Cole noted.

With the PencilVac, Dyson continues its push to merge high-performance technology with user-friendly design, reimagining traditional household tools for modern living.
