State-owned energy company Synergy has finished installing 640 containerized batteries and 160 inverters at its Collie site in Western Australia (WA). The new facility, the Synergy Collie Battery Energy Storage System (CBESS), will start supplying energy to the South West Interconnected System (SWIS) in 2025.
Located next to the 340 MW Collie coal-fired power plant, which is set to close in 2027, the CBESS has a storage capacity of 2,000 MWh, enough to power approximately 785,000 homes. The system is based 180 kilometers south of Perth.
WA Premier Roger Cook emphasized the state government’s commitment to diversifying its economy and leading the clean energy transition. “We are investing more than $5.7 billion (USD 3.6 billion) towards renewable energy generation, transmission, and storage,” Cook said.
“Our investment in battery storage in WA underscores our dedication to providing reliable and sustainable energy, both now and in the future,” he added.
