LG Energy Solution Ltd. (LGES), South Korea’s leading battery manufacturer, announced on Tuesday that it has formed a partnership with French metal scrap recycler Derichebourg (DBG) to create a joint venture (JV) for battery recycling in France.
The 50:50 joint venture will build a battery recycling plant in Val-d’Oise, located just north of Paris. The plant will have the capacity to process more than 20,000 tons of used batteries and scrap annually, with operations expected to begin in 2027, according to a press release from LGES.
This marks the first battery recycling joint venture between a South Korean company and a European company in Europe.
“This partnership with DBG will serve as a stepping stone for LGES to expand into the European battery recycling market,” said an LGES official.
The plant will process used batteries and scrap into black mass, which can then be refined into key battery materials such as lithium, cobalt, and nickel. These materials will be reused in the battery production process at LGES’s global manufacturing facilities.
