Hysen Cadra, a 43-year-old Albanian resident of San Pawl il-Baħar, was sentenced to two years in prison after being found guilty of causing grievous injuries to an Italian man whom he stabbed in an ice cream shop in Pjazza Buġibba.
The incident occurred on February 28, 2024, when Cadra was accused of attacking and threatening two Italian men inside the ice cream parlour. According to evidence presented to Magistrate Rachel Montebello, Cadra had been harassing people inside the shop and making insulting remarks to the two Italians.
Cadra approached one of the men, slapped him on the shoulder, and told him that the table they were sitting at was reserved for him. Due to his offensive behavior, Cadra was asked to leave the parlour but returned shortly after. He slapped the victim in the face, and when the victim angrily retaliated, Cadra stabbed him with a 15cm knife.
A medical team on site immediately transported the victim to Mater Dei Hospital, while the police began their investigation and arrested Cadra.
Italian customers who witnessed the events testified during the trial, and Magistrate Montebello found their accounts, along with the defendant’s own admission, credible. Cadra’s actions, including his harassment and aggression, led to his conviction.
When delivering the sentence, Magistrate Montebello noted that although Cadra had a clean conduct record, his aggressive behavior while intoxicated was a significant factor in the severity of the crime.
