UK-based energy company Balance Power has received planning approval to build a 29.9-megawatt battery energy storage system (BESS) in Coylton, East Ayrshire, Scotland.
The East Ayrshire Council approved the project unanimously following a detailed community consultation. The new facility will help store electricity during times of high generation and release it back into the grid when demand increases.
The Coylton site will include 18 battery units and cover an area of 2.67 hectares (6.6 acres). Once operational, the BESS will have enough storage capacity to power approximately 16,200 homes. The project is expected to go live by the summer of 2026.
Balance Power emphasized that the site will be restored to its original condition after the facility reaches the end of its operational life.
“This battery storage site will support both local and national net zero goals,” said Oli Pettersen, connections manager at Balance Power. “It will also bring benefits to Coylton by creating construction and operational jobs, and by improving energy security.”
Since 2017, Balance Power has secured planning consent for 36 energy projects totaling 532 MW. The company currently has over 2 gigawatts of projects in development. Just last month, it received approval for a 49.5-MW battery storage project in South Staffordshire, England.
