On Saturday, May 17, the Alexandria City Council unanimously approved an ordinance banning gas-powered leaf blowers, making Alexandria the first jurisdiction in Virginia to implement such a ban.
The move follows years of community advocacy and was supported by a Virginia Attorney General opinion from August 2024 confirming the city’s authority to regulate leaf blowers under its noise ordinance.
The ordinance sets an 18-month phase-out period for residents and businesses, while city government operations will stop using gas-powered leaf blowers within one year.
The ban targets both noise pollution and environmental impact. City staff highlighted that one hour of using a gas-powered leaf blower emits pollution equivalent to driving a new car 1,100 miles—the distance from Washington, D.C. to Miami.
