Swindon Borough Council has nearly £2 million to install electric vehicle (EV) charging points over the coming years. The funds are aimed at helping residents who do not have off-street parking.
Councillor Chris Watts, cabinet member for transport and environment, and transport manager Nigel Hale explained the plan to the Build Greener Swindon policy committee. The money comes from the government’s Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Fund, designed to support charging installations on streets and at flats where residents cannot install private chargers.
Mr. Hale said the council is currently in the tendering process to find a contractor to install and operate the chargers. He noted that while Swindon’s town center and car parks already have many chargers, these mainly serve people with off-street parking or private chargers.
The bigger challenge is helping those living in narrow terraced streets, flats, or shared homes, especially where there is no rear access or extra space. Large parts of central Swindon consist of dense Victorian streets with little room for new infrastructure.
To support these residents, an on-street charging program is needed. However, this may cause conflicts with existing on-street parking rules and space availability, making the project complex to implement.
