Leeward Renewable Energy (LRE), part of OMERS Infrastructure, has activated its 126-MW/504-MWh Antelope Valley battery energy storage system (BESS) in Kern County, California.
This is LRE’s first standalone grid-connected battery and its seventh operating clean energy asset in California. With this project, LRE’s total clean energy capacity in the state reaches 596 MW.
The Antelope Valley BESS will enhance the reliability and resilience of California’s power grid. It stores electricity and dispatches it during peak demand, including after sunset. The system can power more than 100,000 homes for up to four hours.
The facility is located adjacent to LRE’s 100-MW Rabbitbrush and 174-MW Chapparal Springs solar and storage projects. The lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries were supplied by U.S. energy storage provider Powin LLC.
