Electric vehicle (EV) drivers, particularly those with Teslas, will soon see major changes along the New Jersey Turnpike. The Turnpike Authority is replacing Tesla Superchargers at all rest stops with Universal Open Access EV chargers provided by Applegreen Electric.
The transition begins this week, with six service areas set to switch by Friday. The Molly Pitcher service area in Cranbury is scheduled to convert next month, while the Clara Barton and John Fenwick stops in Salem County are expected to follow by fall.
Tesla has pushed back against the decision, arguing that limiting charging options to a single brand isn’t good for drivers. The company says it offered an improved proposal to remain as a secondary provider but was turned down. As a result, Tesla will remove all 64 of its Supercharger stalls from the turnpike.
To support its customers, Tesla says it has already built 116 Supercharger stalls off the turnpike to replace those being removed. The company shared a map of the alternative charging sites on its official X (formerly Twitter) account.
