In a landmark step toward sustainable transportation, the City of San Diego has partnered with EVerged to roll out free public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across hundreds of city-owned facilities.
“This truly is a win for the City,” said Lowe, a city official involved in the project. Under the agreement, EVerged will fully finance, permit, construct, operate, and maintain the chargers at no cost to the City throughout the life of the contract.
The initiative aims to accelerate EV adoption by addressing one of the major barriers for many residents—lack of convenient charging options. The city’s ambitious five-year plan calls for the installation of chargers at approximately 400 municipal parking locations, making access easier for both residents and visitors.
Initial installations are already live at locations such as Ocean Beach and the Otay Mesa-Nestor Branch Library, with more chargers coming soon to libraries and recreation centers across San Diego. Importantly, charging at these sites is free, as outlined by the City of San Diego.
“Having chargers throughout the city, available to everyone in every community, will help support the interest and desire to not only purchase these vehicles, but also ensure that folks are able to confidently get anywhere in the City in an EV,” Lowe explained.
By offering accessible, no-cost charging infrastructure, San Diego aims to alleviate range anxiety, especially for individuals who lack access to home or workplace charging.
This public-private partnership represents a significant leap toward the city’s climate and transportation goals, and positions San Diego as a model for equitable and scalable EV infrastructure deployment.
