Malaysia is staying on track to install 10,000 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations nationwide by the end of 2025, according to Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.
Speaking at a dinner with the Malaysian diaspora in Thailand, Fadillah—who also serves as Minister of Energy Transition and Water—said the government’s goal includes stations across Sabah and Sarawak.
“As of December 31, 2024, there are 3,611 public EV charging bays in Malaysia,” he noted, citing data from PLANMalaysia’s national EV charging network dashboard (MEVnet).
Fadillah acknowledged current challenges, particularly in meeting the growing demand for direct current (DC) chargers compared to alternating current (AC) units. To address this, the government is working closely with Petronas and other industry partners.
“We are ensuring sufficient charging connectivity along highways, in rural areas, and throughout the country,” he said.
While the full 10,000 charger target may only be reached by 2026, officials expect the goal for DC chargers to be met by the end of this year.
