MIT-WPU Unveils India’s First Private University Battery Research Facility

by Harry

MIT-World Peace University (MIT-WPU) has launched a new battery fabrication and research facility focused on lithium-ion (Li-ion) and sodium-ion (Na-ion) technologies. It is the first of its kind to be set up by a private state university in India. The initiative supports key national goals like Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India.

The research team at MIT-WPU is working to develop new electrode materials. Their goal is to create batteries with better energy density, longer life, and improved safety. They are also advancing solid-state electrolyte (SSE) technology, which uses materials with high ionic conductivity. These materials are safer and more stable than traditional liquid electrolytes.

Innovative projects underway include glass-polymer composite electrolytes, paper-based battery models, and the production of high-purity solvents and electrolytes. These materials will help Indian battery makers use better-quality components.

MIT-WPU’s lab is designed to be a hub for both academic research and partnerships with industry. It encourages interdisciplinary projects that turn ideas into real-world products. The facility also gives students, Ph.D. scholars, and early-career researchers hands-on experience in cutting-edge battery technology.

Prof. Dr. Bharat Kale, Director of the Centre of Excellence in Materials Science at MIT-WPU and former Director of C-MET, MeitY, said: “This facility strengthens MIT-WPU’s role in developing future battery solutions. With complete in-house infrastructure, we’re creating safer and more powerful batteries, from lithium-ion and sodium-ion to lithium-sulfur and even paper batteries in partnership with MID Sweden. It’s also a key training ground connecting education, industry, and research.”
