ZF’s Commercial Vehicle Solutions (CVS) division has introduced its latest innovation, the e-comp Scroll air compressor, designed specifically for electric trucks, buses, and coaches. The new technology is making its debut at the Advanced Clean Transportation (ACT) Expo in California and Auto Shanghai in China.
As the transportation industry moves towards sustainability, compressed air continues to play a crucial role in braking systems, suspension, and other auxiliary functions. In traditional vehicles, air compressors are powered by internal combustion engines. However, electric vehicles require compressors with independent electric motors.
Traditional piston compressors can create disruptive noise, especially in electric vehicles that operate with less engine sound. The e-comp Scroll overcomes this challenge by using interlocking scrolls to compress air with minimal vibration and noise. With noise levels around 67dB(A)—equivalent to a typical office—the system enhances passenger comfort.
The e-comp Scroll is an oil-free compressor, eliminating the need for oil lubrication, which reduces maintenance costs and enhances the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). Additionally, the system comes with an integrated inverter and liquid cooling, ensuring air compression remains below 90°C (194°F) while efficiently managing variable-speed operation.
Paweł Porczyński, Head of Product Line, Chassis Solutions at ZF CVS, emphasized the advantages of the new technology: “By offering a low-noise, oil-free air compression solution, we are addressing the challenges of zero-emission vehicle targets. The e-comp Scroll not only improves efficiency but also enhances the experience for drivers, passengers, and road users alike.”
