The New Zealand Government is intensifying its efforts to expand the electric vehicle (EV) charging network, introducing a new funding model aimed at accelerating the installation of public charging stations.
This initiative is set to directly impact the Hibiscus Coast, which currently has six EV charging locations. Under the new funding model, additional charging stations will be installed across the region, making it more convenient for both residents and visitors to transition to electric vehicles.
Transport Minister Chris Bishop pointed out that the private sector has been hesitant to invest in EV charging infrastructure due to uncertainty about demand. To address this, the Government is shifting to a more commercial procurement approach.
The initiative will allocate up to $68.5 million in funding to provide concessionary loans to private companies, helping them expand the charging network more rapidly.
“With the increasing popularity of EVs, it’s crucial to support infrastructure growth,” said Minister Bishop. “This initiative will help remove barriers for those considering an EV, particularly for people on the Hibiscus Coast who may have concerns about charging availability.”
