Shenzhen-based DJI, best known for leading the global drone market, is preparing to launch its first robotic vacuum cleaner, the DJI ROMO, this month. This move marks a major step into the competitive world of home robotics.
The ROMO has been in development for four years. The device is a combination vacuum and mop, designed to compete with top brands like Roborock and iRobot in a market that is growing quickly.
The ROMO is expected to feature advanced navigation and obstacle avoidance, technologies adapted from DJI’s drone expertise. Leaked images reveal a sleek robot with a large docking station, suggesting it may offer self-emptying and self-cleaning features — both popular in high-end models.
While DJI has not yet shared full details, industry insiders believe the ROMO will include precise room mapping, smart controls, and features such as pet detection and customized cleaning schedules.
The timing of DJI’s entry is strategic. The global robotic vacuum market shipped 20.6 million units in 2024 — an 11.2% increase from the previous year, according to IDC. Chinese brands dominate the space, with Roborock holding a 16% share, followed by iRobot at 13.7%. In mainland China, Ecovacs, Roborock, and Narwal lead the market, which grew 6.7% in 2024.
DJI is expected to use China’s 618 Shopping Festival to boost sales of the ROMO, taking advantage of a national electronics subsidy program that offers discounts on smart home products. The launch could significantly shake up the robotic vacuum space, as DJI brings its high-tech background into the home.
