- A violent machete fight at a Melbourne shopping centre has prompted Victoria to fast-track a statewide interim ban on machete sales. On Sunday afternoon, gangs armed with machetes clashed, forcing the centre into lockdown and injuring multiple people.
By 8 a.m. Monday, Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan announced that from noon on May 28, the sale of all machetes—defined as cutting-edge knives with blades over 20 centimetres—will be banned across the state. Retailers who violate the ban will face criminal charges.
The interim ban will remain in place until new laws take effect on September 1, when machetes will be officially reclassified as prohibited weapons. From that date, possession of a machete will be illegal in Victoria except under very limited exemptions. Previously allowed for legitimate purposes, machetes will no longer be legally carried without specific permission.
Premier Allan said the goal of the interim ban is to cut off the supply of machetes ahead of the full possession ban.
